WeirFoulds ensures that diversity and human rights are an essential part of all that we do. As a law firm, we actively participate in and promote programs aimed at improving and celebrating diversity within the legal profession and the broader business community. For example, the firm is an active participant in the Law in Action Within Schools (LAWS) Program.
LAWS is an innovative partnership between the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, Osgoode Hall Law School, and the Toronto District School Board designed to deliver an education program aimed at supporting, guiding and motivating high school students who face challenges in engaging successfully with school and accessing postsecondary education. WeirFoulds has hosted several LAWS students and the experience has assisted them with gaining business skills while receiving mentorship from the lawyers in our Toronto office.
Law Firm Diversity and Inclusion Network - Promoting Cultural Diversity
WeirFoulds is an active participant in the Law Firm Diversity and Inclusion Network (LFDIN). LFDIN works in partnership with Legal Leaders for Diversity and Inclusion (LLD). Lisa Borsook, Executive Partner, signed the Statement of Principles of the LFDIN as part of the firm's commitment to diversity and inclusion in the legal community.
WeirFoulds joins more than 15 law firms across Canada who have signed the Statement of Principles. LFDIN affiliated firms aim to share ideas and work together to promote diversity and encourage a culture of inclusion in their firms and the legal professional generally, to attract and retain the best talent, and best serve their clients. We collaborate with other firms to share knowledge on best practices and work toward supporting and developing more programs to support diversity and inclusion within the legal community.
Supporting Women in the Workplace
We are proud to support women lawyers and clients through our Zenith Award winning WeirFoulds Women (WFW) program. WFW was established in 1990 with the goal to promote a successful and diverse working environment. The firm hosts several successful events through WFW that provide an open forum to our lawyers, clients and contacts to discuss hot button issues such as women representation on corporate board of directors, work-life balance, organizational and health issues, and women in senior roles within law firms, amongst others.
Pro Bono and Community Involvement
WeirFoulds is committed to community service and pro bono work, and consider this work an essential element of our professional duty. WeirFoulds is a proud supporter of Progress Place, and has been a part of the Transitional Employment Program for several years. The Transitional Employment Program allows for a smooth transition into the workforce giving individuals with mental illness a positive environment to build their skill sets. WeirFoulds has hosted several members of the program during the course of our relationship.
One of our partners is a member of the Council for Clean & Reliable Electricity (CCRE). This federally incorporated non-profit organization was formed by a group of volunteers to provide a platform for open public dialogue and a solutions-oriented approach to the challenges of the energy sector. Representatives from universities, public and private sector business leaders, and labour have collaborated to broaden the public debate on energy issues.
WeirFoulds LLP is located in the award-winning, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) EB Platinum O&M and Building Owners & Managers Association (BOMA) BEST Platinum certified TD Bank Tower, a part of the TD Centre. TD Centre engages in several programs and certification schemes that support sustainability. WeirFoulds participates in the GREEN AT WORK™ program which enforces green operational standards. GREEN AT WORK™ is comprised of five operating platforms that encourages sustainable thinking and action, including Energy, Waste Management, Environmental Protection (land, air and water), Sustainable Procurement and Stakeholder Collaboration. As a result of these initiatives, in 2015 TD Bank Tower has reduced water consumption and energy use, and has been able to divert 81% of waste that is generated from landfills.
