In the Public Interest
At the heart of planning is a powerful idea: that communities should be designed to serve the common good. Planning in the public interest is a foundational principle of the planning profession and a guiding commitment for every member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI).
From housing and transportation to environmental protection and community engagement, planners make decisions that shape how people live, work, move, and thrive.
What Is the Public Interest?
The public interest is about making decisions that serve the long-term well-being of communities: socially, economically, environmentally, and culturally.
This means:
- Promoting equity, inclusion, and accessibility in community design
- Protecting natural resources and preparing for climate resilience
- Supporting economic development and responsible land use
- Ensuring transparency and accountability in decision-making
- Balancing the needs of today with the needs of future generations
Registered Professional Planners (RPPs) must consider diverse perspectives and often competing priorities, working to deliver outcomes that benefit the broader community – not just individual interests.
OPPI’S Commitment to the Public Interest
As the professional body representing thousands of members across Ontario, OPPI ensures that planning in the public interest is more than a goal – it’s a responsibility.
OPPI supports this through:
- A Professional Code of Practice that requires members to uphold ethical standards, integrity, and public accountability in all professional activities
- Policy advocacy that puts the needs of communities first and influences government decisions on housing, climate, infrastructure, and more
- Public education and engagement that builds trust in the planning process and empowers community voices
- Professional development and guidance to help planners navigate complex issues with care and consistency
Why It’s More Important Than Ever
Ontario’s communities are facing complex, interconnected challenges from housing affordability and climate change to urban growth and infrastructure pressures. In this environment, planning that puts the public interest first is critical.
Through planning in the public interest, communities benefit from:
- More inclusive and livable neighbourhoods
- Smarter, more resilient infrastructure
- Environmental stewardship and sustainability
- Fair and transparent decision-making processes
- Greater civic engagement and trust in decision-makers
How You Can Support the Public Interest
- As a community member: Participate in local planning processes and learn how planners work to balance needs, solve problems, and create shared value.
- As a planner: Uphold your professional obligation to act in the public interest in every project, policy, and plan.
- As a student or emerging professional: Learn the ethical foundations of planning and commit to serving the common good from the start.
At OPPI, we believe good planning is good for everyone. When planning is rooted in the public interest, we build communities that are healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable for all Ontarians, now and in the future.
