Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Reconciliation & Social Justice (DEI–RSJ)

Planning shapes our communities and we are committed to ensuring they are inclusive, and equitable.

Our Statement of Action

Indigenous Peoples, rights-holding communities, and equity-deserving individuals have long faced systemic barriers within the planning profession, and OPPI, as Ontario’s professional planning regulator, recognizes its responsibility to drive meaningful change.

Our Approach: An Integrated Ecosystem

Our work is guided by interconnected focus areas that together create a holistic and sustainable approach to advancing DEI and reconciliation.

Peer-to-Peer Mentorship

We are fostering inclusive relationships that support and empower individuals from Indigenous and equity-deserving communities. Through shared experiences and ongoing dialogue, we ensure programs and initiatives are shaped by the voices and needs of those they serve.

Community Engagement

We are deepening relationships with Indigenous and equity-deserving communities across Ontario—listening, learning, and co-creating planning solutions that reflect diverse perspectives at the local level.

Education & Training

We are expanding learning opportunities that build cultural competency, challenge bias, and support inclusive planning practices. From conferences to webinars and publications, we are embedding DEI–RSJ across all professional development offerings.

Research & Partnerships

We are strengthening partnerships with organizations that share our values to amplify impact, expand reach, and advance shared goals. This includes a focus on building meaningful relationships with Indigenous-led organizations.

Improved Communications

We are committed to transparent, consistent, and inclusive communication. By sharing progress, celebrating successes, and inviting feedback, we aim to build trust and increase engagement across our membership.

Our Five-Year Workplan

At OPPI, we are committed to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, reconciliation, and social justice across the planning profession. Our five-year workplan is designed as an evolving framework that grows through ongoing learning, collaboration, and meaningful engagement with communities and members.

This work is grounded in action. It reflects our commitment to embedding equity and reconciliation into everything we do, intentionally, transparently, and in partnership with those we serve.

How We’re Taking Action

Our workplan is built on tangible actions that drive real change. These include:

  • Expanding mentorship, scholarships, and bursaries to support underrepresented groups
  • Embedding community input into all programs and initiatives
  • Hosting local engagement events across OPPI districts
  • Developing new partnerships and advancing collaborative research
  • Increasing DEI–RSJ-focused education and working toward mandatory learning requirements
  • Enhancing communications through diverse platforms, including blogs, podcasts, and video

A Living Commitment

This is not a static plan. It is an evolving commitment that will continue to be shaped by our members, partners, and communities.

Together, we are working toward a more inclusive, equitable, and just planning profession.
