OPPI Act, 1994

The Ontario Professional Planners Institute Act, 1994, establishes the legislative framework governing the practice of professional planning in Ontario. It formally recognizes the role of the professional planner as one that serves the public interest by applying specialized knowledge, independent professional judgement, and ethical standards to land use planning and related decision-making. Through the Act, the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) is authorized to regulate the profession, including setting standards for admission, practice, and professional conduct.

The Act is foundational to the planning profession in Ontario, providing credibility, accountability, and public confidence in the work of Registered Professional Planners (RPPs). By clearly defining professional obligations and oversight, it helps ensure that planning advice is informed, transparent, and responsibly delivered within complex policy, political, and community contexts. The Ontario Professional Planners Institute Act, 1994 received Royal Assent on December 9, 1994, marking a significant milestone in the formal recognition and regulation of the planning profession in the province.
