Pathway to Registered Professional Planner
01
Studying at an Accredited Planning Program?
OPPI works closely with planning schools across Ontario that are accredited by the Professional Standards Board (PSB) and recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). Enrolling in one of these accredited programs puts you on a clear track to becoming a Registered Professional Planner (RPP). If you’re enrolled in one of these programs, you’re already on a strong foundation. Becoming an OPPI Student member strengthens your academic experience and prepares you for the professional world.
02
Have Relevant Experience
Not all planning journeys follow the same route. If you have substantial work experience or academic training outside of an accredited planning program, you may still qualify to pursue professional certification through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). PLAR is an alternative path administered by the Professional Standards Board (PSB) that evaluates your planning-related knowledge and experience against national competency standards. If successful, PLAR can allow you to enter the certification process without graduating from an accredited program.
PLAR may be right for you if:
- You have professional experience in land use planning, policy, development, or related fields
- You hold an academic credential in a non-accredited but related discipline
- You are transitioning from another country or profession into planning
- You want formal recognition for your learning gained through work, volunteering, or life experience

Invest in Your Future as a Planning Professional
Student membership is affordable and designed to support your academic and career growth without breaking the bank. It’s a smart investment in your future as a planning professional.
