DIRECTOR OF PLANNING

Being part of our collaborative team of Architects, Engineers, Designers, and Planners provides the right professional with the opportunity to shape communities and direct development projects from inception, through the approvals process, and into implementation.

In this role, you will create innovative development proposals that will reflect the needs of current communities while achieving the goals and objectives of practical and sound planning principles.

You will direct the business side of the Planning practice by:

  • Leading, managing and mentoring staff,
  • Recruiting and hiring new team members,
  • Developing proposals and setting budgets,
  • Invoice for services and be accountable for the overall professional and financial performance of the Planning Department.

You will autonomously direct the Planning Department within our multi-disciplinary firm.

Reporting directly to the President, this position will be responsible for the coordination of all forms of planning applications, including:

  • Draft Plans of Subdivisions
  • Draft Plans of Condominium
  • Official Plan Amendments
  • Zoning By-Law Amendments
  • Consent applications
  • Subdivision and Condominium registrations.

The Director of Urban Planning is fully integrated with our Architects and Engineers during the design process and will oversee all Planning Justifications Reports, applications, public meetings, presentations to municipal councils, and approvals.

The practice area is across southwestern Ontario (Sarnia to Fort Erie), focusing on Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant Counties.
 

The following list provides typical tasks throughout a given day:  

  • Meet with clients to understand their goals and objectives and develop work plans and budgets for service to implement their vision.
  • Work with our in-house Planners, Architects and Engineers on a range of public and private development projects (including municipal projects like new fire stations and private subdivisions and condominiums).  
  • Lead project strategy sessions to develop the best project approach for our clients.
  • Meet with municipal planning staff to discuss our approach to approvals and strategies for implementing planning policies.
  • Manage Planning staff on all of the firm’s large and small-scale planning projects;
  • Organize and participate in all sizes of stakeholder meetings and public consultation processes;
  • Research and presentation of planning analyses;
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • A solid drive to be fully integrated into a collaborative design team with Architects and Engineers,
  • A University degree in Planning, OPPI membership is preferred, 
  • At least five years of progressive experience in a municipal or consulting environment,
  • Registered Professional Planner in the Province of Ontario,
  • Strong public consultation experience,
  • Strong Project Management experience with complex municipal planning projects comprised of multi-disciplinary teams,
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, query, analyze, and effectively communicate information,
  • Highly motivated, organized, flexible, enthusiastic team player committed to upholding our reputation for delivering high-quality service,
  • Excellent written and oral communication and time management skills, and
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License
