ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNER

Reporting to the Supervisor of Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change, the Environmental Planner is responsible for: reviewing all development applications; commenting and providing professional recommendations on behalf of the Town with respect to environmental and climate change related legislation; and supporting the development and implementation of various corporate and community-wide strategies and plans related to climate change, environmentally sustainable practices, water and energy conservation, air and water quality, energy planning, and waste management. 


Key Duties:

  • Reviews all development applications for compliance and implementation of the mandatory requirements identified in the Ajax Green Standard;
  • Supports the Policy and Sustainability Division of the Planning Section and coordinates research, project planning, and other major strategic initiatives;Monitors, reviews, provides critical analysis, and provides recommendations and formal responses on matters of a policy and/or legislative nature originating from Provincial, Regional and other municipal governments;
  • Represents the Town and provides environmental sustainability and climate change expertise on various external technical and citizen’s advisory committees;
  • Oversees data collection and research activities that involve careful and critical analysis and strategic thinking;
  • Identifies issues, provides thoughtful critical analysis, and examines input from various technical and scientific sources and all stakeholders to prepare corporate and community-wide programs, research reports, strategies and policies;
  • Provides evidence at Ontario Land Tribunal Hearings or other tribunals as a qualified expert witness;
  • Prepares staff reports and public presentations to Community Affairs and Planning Committee, General Government Committee, Council and advisory committees;
  • Provides in-depth analysis, technical and policy information, and advice to Committees, Council, Department Heads, Town staff, agencies, and the general public; 
  • Prepares and/or comments on terms of reference, prepares project plans, consults with stakeholders, prepares reports and other documents;
  • Addresses inquiries from residents, applicants, developers, staff and Council related to planning policy projects, the Ajax Green Standard, and climate change related initiatives/programs;
  • Supports and participates in community-wide environmental and sustainability initiatives.


Qualifications/Skills:

  • Four (4) year University degree in Environmental Science, Planning or a combination of education and experience deemed equivalent;
  • Minimum four (4) years relevant and current work experience, with a focus/specialization in environmental/natural heritage/sustainability planning;
  • Registered Professional Planner (RPP) or Candidate Membership and in process of obtaining RPP designation;
  • Candidate or Full Membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP) and the Ontario Professional Planners Institute;
  • Environmental Professional designation and/or LEED AP certification is considered an asset;
  • Experience providing expert testimony before the Ontario Land Tribunal is considered an asset;
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated implementation of legislative requirements under the Planning Act and policy framework under the Provincial Policy Statement, Growth Plan and Greenbelt Plan;
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written; necessary for public presentations and appearing before meetings of Council and Committees;
  • Strong organizational, time management and planning skills; 
  • Proficient in M365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook);
  • Proven ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to provide a criminal reference check that is satisfactory to the Town of Ajax, upon being hired.


Salary$78,096.20 - $82,646.20 per year
 

This is a unionized position that works 35 hours per week.   The hours of work are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and are in accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement.
