Planning Engineer

To prepare for community development, urban planners study their subject city's population, current land zoning and current use of land through surveys, field investigations, and other research methods. They use computers to analyze their information, map land areas, project program costs, and predict trends. Urban planners use their reports and liaison with experienced contractors to plan how the city's land should be used. They may also plan public transportation systems if necessary. Urban planners spend much of their time interacting with other professionals. They may need to hold public meetings with government officials, land developers, lawyers, special interest groups, and the general public to develop or address issues regarding city land use. Urban planners must also defend their own proposals before legislative committees.

  • Planning the design and construction of new urban infrastructures.
  • Spearheading rezoning applications and site plan applications of raw land
  • Liaising with the appropriate contractors/experts to develop well thought out and efficient site plans
  • Determining the best use of land based on current zoning and the official/future plans of the municipality.
  • Designing and adapting city plans for population growth and development.
  • Keeping communities informed of city planning developments.
  • Recommending the most suitable placement of residential infrastructure
  • Ensuring the environment is protected throughout the planning and urban development process.
  • Suggesting and implementing zoning regulations for private properties, within urban areas.
  • Using computer software applications to assist the planning process, including mapping land areas, forecasting planning and development costs, and predicting trends, such as population growth.
  • Preparing reports that detail the location and characteristics of different urban infrastructures, as well as population factors.
  • Holding public meetings with government officials, land developers, lawyers, special interest groups, and the general public to address issues regarding urban land use and development.
 

Skills/Requirements    

  • Master's degree in urban or regional planning, environmental planning, urban design, or a related field preferred.
  • Must have RPP certification
  • OPPI membersgip is preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in urban planning
  • Previous experience working as an urban planner.
  • Knowledge completing Rezoning and Site Plan application forms.
  • Superb project management skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent use of AutoCAD to create Site Plans
  • Experienced at using Adobe Creative Suite programs, such as Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
  • Ability to generate high-quality graphics, diagrams, maps, sketches, and/or renderings.
  • Detailed knowledge of the principles behind new urbanism, transit-oriented development
