OPPI reflects on July 1

On July 1 every year, Canada has an opportunity to celebrate, remember, and reflect on the histories of how the country was formed.

Land-use planning took place long before settlers arrived, but when they did, planning played a fundamental role in Canada’s nation-building process. As practitioners in the field today, it is important that we learn about and recognize this shared history, to honour Indigenous peoples and their traditional territories that we live and work on.

OPPI encourages our members to take time this holiday weekend and beyond to reflect and find opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of the truths and histories of the lands we call Canada. Together, we can work to reconcile the past, and to help build a strong, resilient future for our communities.
