OPPI Recognizes apology from Pope Francis on residential schools

After weeks of discussion, and visits of First Nations, Inuit and Métis delegations held at the Vatican, Pope Francis has apologized for the Roman Catholic Church's role in residential schools and plans to visit Canada later this year.

OPPI recognizes this action as a step toward recognition and accountability of the experiences of Indigenous people in Canada. It is through acknowledgement that we can foster positive relations with, and respect for Indigenous individuals and their history.

OPPI encourages our members to reflect and find opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of the truths and histories of the lands we call Canada. Together, we can work to reconcile the past, and to help build a strong, resilient future for our communities.
