February 1 marks the start of Black History Month, a time to honour, recognize, and celebrate the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present, and their impact on the future.

We, the professional organizations of the planning profession in Canada, are committed to elevating the voices of African, Black, and Caribbean planning professionals and learning from their experiences in this country throughout the month of February – and beyond. We encourage our members, allies, and partners to continue to find ways to learn about Canada's Black history, its intersections with the planning profession, and the current work being done by Black planning professionals in your community. We recognize that this knowledge and understanding will help all planning professionals to better serve a diversity of communities and work more inclusively in the public interest. We believe that listening to Black voices is fundamental to advancing the planning profession and transforming planning and decision-making processes and practices.

We are committed, now and for the future, to ensuring that including Black perspectives in planning will lead to more inclusive communities, networks, and systems that will benefit people now and for generations to come.
