Active, Accessible, and Sustainable School Travel: Incorporating Experiences of Disability into School Travel Planning

October 03, 2017

11:00am-11:15am

Children’s independent mobility and active school travel have become subjects of heightened interest among transportation planning scholars and practitioners in recent years. However, little attention has been given to children living with disability. This session will highlight new research about how children living with disability, and their households, experience school travel in Ontario. The emphasis will be on unpacking some social equity issues associated with the school travel experiences of these households and identifying ways in which planners can better account for the needs and desires of children living with disability, and their families.

Learning Objectives:
• Gaining knowledge about the little attention given children living with disability in school travel-related research and policy.
• Understanding one’s own conceptualizations of disability and how they affect every day planning
