Indigenous Place Making as an Agent of Reconciliation

Canada’s Indigenous peoples have a 15,000-year relationship with Canada. While more than 60 per cent of Indigenous Canadians now live in urban areas, the presence of Indigenous culture in the fabric of our communities is virtually invisible. What does belonging look like if nothing of your culture, language or world views are represented in the place you live? How can you ever feel welcome? Presented by founding members of the Indigenous Place Making Council, this session will provide a framework for Indigenous placemaking and the critical role planning can have in addressing urgent issues of reconciliation. The session will present a model for working collaboratively with Indigenous stakeholders to restore an Indigenous presence in Canadian communities, while providing tangible benefits and economic development for Indigenous citizens.
