How an Appreciation of Economics Will Make You a Better Land Use Planner

October 05, 2017

12:15pm-1:15pm

Economics can play an important role in effective urban policy outcomes, and in land use planning in particular. This session will introduce participants to what economics is all about and how economists think. Presenters will highlight the ways economic analyses and insights can be positive factors in effective and cost-efficient planning decision-making and policy evaluation. The discussion will focus on the economists’ tools—economic analysis and forecasting, real estate market analysis, financial analysis, benefit-cost analysis, impact analysis, policy evaluation—and case studies.

Learning Objectives:
  • Gaining knowledge about what comprises economics.
  • Understanding how economics can help planners make effective decisions.
  • Gaining knowledge through case studies about how economic analysis and insight led to more effective decisions and the adverse impacts of ignoring economic considerations.
