100: Planning Climate Resilient Communities

October 01, 2019

11:00AM - 12:00PM

This session will address how the current and upcoming climate-induced changes result in the fundamental need for municipalities to question how they undertake all aspects of service delivery from planning, development, investment and re-investment. Highlighting City of Waterloo Climate Action Initiatives, the session will look into how to reconsider municipal development and redevelopment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by applying a “climate lens” to fundamental planning documents including official plans and zoning by-laws. The session will discuss increased height and density, tree canopy, transportation networks, stormwater management, and the integration of public transit.  In addition, the session will outline tools for garnering political support for climate action through community planning documents.
