105: Reimagining the Mall – Realizing Healthy and Complete Communities

October 01, 2019

11:00AM - 12:00PM

Bricks and mortar retail is changing and, currently, residential is often the most lucrative use. Existing malls serve not only an important retail function for the local neighbourhood, but they also serve as gathering places. As communities around malls change as a result of economic, social, technological and political issues, planners need to ensure that they grow for the better through healthy pedestrian-oriented growth patterns that create sustainable viable communities. As the form of these malls and their surrounding communities transition, it is important to preserve their current functions and ensure that the community meets the day-to-day needs of people throughout all stages of their life.

In this session, participants will learn about what the City of Mississauga is doing to ensure the healthy development of the city by creating policies to direct potential redevelopment and intensification in strategic areas. Through the Reimagining the Mall project, participants will learn about how this project will guide the long-term evolution of five areas anchored by shopping malls to ensure that future intensification in these areas is done in a way that fosters healthy, mixed-use communities. The City is doing this by proactively updating our land use policies so that they are in place should a landowner choose to redevelop in the future. Participants will also learn about the best practices adopted and lessons learned from this project.
