306: Catalysts for change: How public and private partnerships transform malls into vibrant, compact, mixed use urban centres.

October 01, 2019

2:30PM - 3:30PM

Shopping malls have been a staple of the Canadian retail landscape since their emergence in the 1960s and 1970s. However, the form of retail has continued to evolve over time where today there is a shift away from the shopping mall model.  Malls are ideal locations for intensification and redevelopment, given their land footprint, proximity to transit, vehicular access, and the fact that they’re usually owned by a single entity.  In a panel discussion, participants will hear from municipal planners, urban designers, and a developer who will discuss different mall redevelopment models and how public and private partnerships can transform malls into vibrant, compact, mixed use urban centres.
