506: Planning for 21st Century Ontario

October 02, 2019

11:00AM - 12:00PM

OPPI, with the help of its government relations firm StrategyCorp, is asking members to the Institute develop a vision of the planning system for the 21st century. Many people in Ontario lament the role of politics in planning, but this simple phrase obscures a complex network of relationships, democratic control, and stakeholder interests about who should determine how our communities evolve and how resources are allocated.

As we celebrate the past 25 years of RPP, the Institute is also looking forward to the next 25 years, and beyond, to develop a vision and reality for future RPPs. In the development of OPPI’s white paper, much of the discussion that has occurred to date has been about the challenges the current system faces and how planners in Ontario advocate that we overcome them. Ultimately, OPPI’s white paper will present a vision where elected officials make policy decisions – with advice and guidance from RPPs – that chart the future of Ontario’s communities within the guidelines provided by the province. In this vision, there is a clear distinction between the role of the planner and the role of the elected official. In addition, this includes involving the general public and Indigenous communities where it is most meaningful for shaping the future of our communities and ecosystems that support them.

We are asking members at OPPI19: Beyond25 to have your say on the development of this white paper. This session will outline the conversation to date and discuss the framework for a white paper, how OPPI and StrategyCorp arrived at this point, and seeks member input and feedback.
