TECH700: Transformative Transportation Planning in the Smartphone Era

October 02, 2019

8:15AM - 4:45PM

Through Transportation Master Plans (TMP) undertaken by the City of Toronto, transportation planners must observe and anticipate travel patterns in order to establish mobility frameworks. The analysis of pedestrians, cyclists, transit, and vehicles all take place, but there are often limitations to conventional data sources in addressing all the requirements of a TMP. Secondary Plan studies for Don Mills Crossing, Laird in Focus, ConsumersNext, and Keele-Finch Plus developed new mobility frameworks for these large areas with existing employment uses and car-oriented built forms. Planners used a combination of traditional and emerging data sources to tackle the distinct challenges in each study. In this session, participants will learn how traditional research methods are used in combination with newer GPS data sources, learn about transportation planning in suburban business parks experiencing growth pressures and consider research methodologies that can be applied to other municipalities and contexts.
