TECH800: Demonstrating Design Principles Through Technology in the City of Kitchener

October 02, 2019

8:15AM - 4:45PM

Over the past few years, urban designers at the City of Kitchener have been accelerating the use of technology to elevate public, staff and industry stakeholder expertise in urban design. Their focus has been on demonstrating and exploring new and evolving Kitchener-specific design principles through collaborative and participatory methods. This session will explore the use of 3D modelling to visualize the urban environment and perform real time shadow studies; how LIDAR and GIS data is used to perform viewshed analyses; and how 3D printed building models can be used to inform important built-form relationships and urban design principles. Participants will also learn how collaboration and sharing of technology among designers, developers, city staff and the public results in improved, increasingly sophisticated outcomes and protects for future interests of all participants.
