The recent 2016 census data demonstrates that only 12% of the population in Ontario’s mid-sized metro areas live in dense, walkable active core neighbourhoods (such as downtowns), while the rest live in suburbs. In contrast to the Toronto and Ottawa regions, core populations in most mid-sized cities have declined, even as the suburbs on the edges have grown in expensive and less sustainable low-density, auto-dependent subdivisions. In this session, participants will learn about how most Ontario mid-sized cities are losing population in their cores and growing in a less sustainable mode on the edges, the difference in growth patterns and policy between big and mid-sized cities.
