1002A: The Role of Land Use Planning in the Sharing Economy – Airbnb and Other Future Disruptors

October 03, 2019

2:00PM - 2:30PM

The sharing economy is a digital-marketplace where you can use online platforms to rent or share property, goods or services. As new technologies emerge from the sharing economy, traditional land use planning is continuously challenged. At what point do these new technologies cross the threshold into a new land use that should be regulated by land use planning? In this session, learn how the City of Toronto addressed short-term rentals (e.g. Airbnb) and why they took the approach they did. Participants will also leave with an understanding of the role land use planners could take to regulate the sharing economy, discuss other potential sharing economy disruptors and their possible implications and brainstorm approaches to embrace, regulate and respond to the sharing economy and anticipate new technologues.
