803: Sustainable Affordability: How Planning for Durability can Ensure Housing Affordability for Generations

Speaker: John Armstrong

September 22, 2022

1:15PM - 2:15PM

Sponsored By Masonry Works

Sticker price is only one part of the affordability equation. Maintaining affordability relies not only on up-front cost, but on housing with long lifespans and low costs over that lifespan. Measures taken to cut costs during the construction phase will have affordability impacts down the line – diminishing home value, greater need for maintenance or replacement and the resulting waste of raw materials. Affordable doesn’t have to mean cheap. Often the cheapest products are the ones that last the least amount of time. This session explores how affordability should be achieved without sacrificing standards.
