201: Evolving the “Established” Neighbourhood

October 01, 2019

1:15PM - 2:15PM

As our cities continue to grow, a large segment of the population is being excluded from the housing market, due to the lack of choice between the detached house and the mid to high-rise apartment building. These in-between housing forms are often grade-related and referred to as the “missing middle”.

Missing middle intensification within our established neighbourhoods offers an opportunity to deliver a more diverse housing supply to meet the needs of our growing population. In this session, Bousfields will focus on the City of Toronto and how current policies have affected the evolution of our established neighbourhoods, which are ripe to accommodate missing middle housing. We will explore principles for achieving greater housing diversity with lessons learned for other communities facing similar housing pressures.
