MW1: Applying Gordon Cullen’s Townscape Definitions and Techniques in an Urban Sketching Workshop at the Distillery District

This mobile workshop will follow a walking route through Toronto’s Distillery District, to observe and record a sequence of urban spaces and focal points with simple line drawings.  This exercise will be modeled on the principles of urban design set out in Gordon Cullen’s 1961 book “Townscape” and will teach a simplified drawing techniques as visual note taking. Participants will start with a brief outline of Cullen’s definitions of urban spaces, such as enclaves, enclosure, closed vista and deflection, all of which are found in the courtyards and passages defined by the former industrial buildings of the Distillery District. A basic drawing technique will be demonstrated as a sort of graphic notation, before heading along a short walking route; stopping periodically to discuss the attributes of a series of linked spaces and make visual sketches recording this sequence. Participants will also take a short tour of the Distillery District, learn some basic drawing technique as a sort of graphic notation and analyze the urban characteristics of the Distillery District.

 

Please note: Drawing ability is NOT required for this workshop. A straight-forward, simplified graphic vocabulary of lines and shapes will be taught and utilized. Instructional notes and all materials will be provided. Participants will need transit passes to travel from the Beanfield Centre to the Distillery District and should dress in appropriate clothing for this tour.
