31.5 million Canadians subscribe to wireless services, representing 90% of the Canadian population. 5G infrastructure is expected to result in the industry spending $26 billion between 2020 and 2026. Data consumption is growing at astounding rates showing no sign of slowing down but rather speeding up dramatically. Stop and think, how do wireless providers deliver service for consumption? The answer so far is physical infrastructure, providing a local community with an "on-ramp" to wireless services connecting people to others in every corner of the Earth. Local municipalities are faced with a 'balancing act' between a fast-paced and changing antenna systems industry and valid land use planning concerns within a local community. In this session, learn about the broader context and importance of where the future may be headed with communication, broadcasting infrastructure, gain knowledge on the delicate balancing act taking place between industry needs and local land use planning needs, and how municipalities can utlize a “path of least resistence” or incentive-based approach for public consultations to achieve better land use planning outcomes.
