602B: Being ”Smart” is Easier Than We Think

October 02, 2019

2:35PM - 2:50PM

With the myriad of technological advances we hear about weekly, planning in Ontario is undoubtedly at an exciting point in time. These advancements have allowed policy makers to leverage the collective intelligence of their agency’s planning and engineering processes through better mapping, more valuable data and increased opportunities to break through silos that may exist internally. This session will present lessons learned from a recent exercise with a southern Ontario municipality that sought to incorporate technology into routine planning, engineering and capital works projects, and how adopting a needs driven strategy has been a key approach to creating relevant and effective policy. This session will also work to debunk the confusion surrounding “smart” cities and will present a series of tips on how towns and cities can expand and advance while continuing to provide daily services and functions to their residents. Participants will also hear about the many towns and cities already on their way to preparing for the cities of the future.
