805: Good Data – City-Wide Heritage Surveys as Planning Tools

October 03, 2019

10:45AM - 11:45AM

In municipalities across Ontario, planners often plan without the data they require to fully understand the DNA of a place – including its heritage resources. The heritage registers they work with are often the result of individual listings and designations combined with lists inherited through amalgamations and heritage districts – not systematic surveys. As a result, place-making misses connections to place, and development proceeds without being enriched by connections to the past. In this session, participants can learn from examples in Hamilton and Ottawa about how city-wide heritage surveys can be systematic, game-changing planning tools that can gather foundational data for planners, in advance of secondary plans, development applications, or building permits. In addition, learn more about survey methodolgies and how cultural heritage planning tools can encourage community collaboration.
