101B: Stories from Peterborough Using a Health Equity Lens to Manage Uneven Growth

October 01, 2019

11:20AM - 11:35AM

At its most basic sense, equity simply means fairness or justice. When health is added to create “health equity,” it means that everyone has equal opportunities for good health. Unfortunately, there is a large body of evidence that demonstrates considerable health inequities exist in Ontario. These inequities are systematically related to social position; which means that health worsens with declining social position related to income, education, ethnicity, race, and other factors. This session will explore the concept of health equity and analyze how it can be used as an important lens in land use planning. Theory discussed in this session will be amplified through storytelling, which will describe Peterborough Public Health’s journey to use health equity concepts to guide their work on the City of Peterborough and the County of Peterborough Official Plan Reviews. Participants will also be able to differtiate between equitable and inequitable growth; and identify planning tools that can be used to bring a health equity lens to their work.
