107: Understanding Environmental Justice and its Relationship with Climate Change

October 01, 2019

11:00AM - 12:00PM

Environmental justice refers to the fair, equal, and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of background or geography. Environmental justice touches on important everyday issues and discussions that are fundamental to our practice:

  • Who are we planning for?
  • How do we ensure equal access to participation, both in the planning process and in the built, social, and natural environments?
  • Do planning outcomes enshrine both equality and equity?
These questions are increasingly important as our collective understanding and appreciation of the full impacts of climate change continue to unfold and evolve. In this session, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of this topic and its relationship with climate change and planning, learn how climate change will impact communities disproportionately and offer members the opportunity to consider how day-to-day actions have tangible implications and learn about the ability of passive engagement techniques using a variety of mediums.
