304: Planning for First Nation Communities – The Driving Forces Behind Uneven Growth

October 01, 2019

2:30PM - 3:30PM

Uneven growth is prominent in Indigenous communities. There exists a stark “infrastructure gap” between communities on reserve as compared to surrounding municipalities and non-Indigenous communities. This session will examine some of the contributing factors that helped create and continues to sustain uneven growth in First Nations communities. Disparities in some First Nation communities compared to others will also be examined, particularly the uneven growth observed between First Nations in Southern and Northern Ontario. Case studies will be used to highlight uneven growth, and strategies will be discussed to enable planners understand uneven growth and encourage more even growth in the future. This session will also discuss current community consultation practices and some do’s and don’ts.
