406: Who is Planning the Canadian Smart City?

October 01, 2019

4:00PM - 5:00PM

Infrastructure Canada is currently midstream on its first round of the Smart Cities Challenge --- a contest intended to spark innovation in communities around the country. $75 million will fund four projects in different size municipalities and indigenous communities. A Ryerson University research team has conducted an evaluation of the first round of submissions and their findings have important implications for planners in Ontario and across Canada. In a panel discussion, the team will discuss their analysis of the results and what it reveals about what cities value, what challenges they face planning smart cities, what role they foresee technology and data fulfilling, and what kinds of partnerships with civil society and private sector firms they require to overcome these challenges.
