OLD Conference 2019

407: Going to New Heights in Halton Planning by Using Drone Technology to Improve Understanding

October 01, 2019

4:00PM - 5:00PM

In 2016, Halton Region became the first GTA municipality to successfully launch an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) / Drone program. UAVs have become an important tool in upholding Halton’s vision for the natural heritage system in 4 main areas: Reconnaissance, Environmental Review, Regional Forestry and Tree By-Law Implementation, and Educational Programmes. In this session, learn how Halton Planning Services pursues drone exploration and excellence from determining the extent of beach, sand, shoreline erosion and invasive species, combing a terrain model of a site with mosaic of aerial photography (site and foliage) for desktop environmental evaluation, locating beaver dams and lodges and identifying related surface water management issues, to obtaining information on tree and woodland resources, and preparing context information for 3D Modelling. Participants can also learn and understand the process to fulfill Nav Canada’s requirements including training and licensing of pilots.

Please note: this session will include a technology demonstration.
