702B: Climate Action Through Collective Impact in Urban Forest Renewal

Trees and the urban forest protects our cities and urban areas against some of the worst effects of climate change, whether it's intercepting rain, capturing stormwater runoff, or reducing soil erosion and urban heat island effect. However, the renewal of our urban forests often doesn't feature prominently amongst major climate actions and strategies. Instead, actions are often focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing energy consumption, waste diversion and water conservation. This session will examine the idea of urban forest renewal and how there's much more to creating and sustaining healthy urban forests than just planting more trees, and will look at how the concept of “collective impact” is not only applicable but necessary for better aligning a community’s diverse needs with those of the urban forest and natural environment.
