MW13: Exploring Conventional and Innovative Practices in Neighbourhood Retailing

At the heart of many of Toronto’s neighbourhoods are commercial districts which serve the needs of and reflect the identities of the local community. Gentrification and changes in the retail sector have put significant pressure on neighbourhood business, but many of Toronto’s commercial streets continue to thrive. In Toronto, neighbourhood retailing is characterized by small and independent stores, mixed land uses, pedestrian activities, neighbourhood-serving businesses and an eclectic collection of specialty or ethnic stores reflecting the diverse needs of a multicultural population. This mobile workshop will take participants through several west end neighbourhoods (Queen St. West, West Queen West and Parkdale) to gain knowledge about emerging trends and innovative practices, understand the evolution of neighbourhood retailing and the principles for its vitality and how to apply learnings to future neighbourhood retail development.

 

Please note: Participants will be taking a bus to these neighbourhoods but will also be walking around in the neighbourhoods, so please ensure you have appropriate footwear.
