John van Nostrand is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Royal Architectural institute of Canada. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1972 and in 1977 moved to Botswana to manage the first bona fide squatter upgrading project in Southern Africa. He returned to Canada in 1980 and set up his first planning and architectural firms in 1982. These firms have since been responsible for a number of large-scale, interdisciplinary planning, infrastructure and/or housing projects for new towns; regional growth plans, mine resettlement projects, urban waterfronts and transit corridors in Africa and across Canada.
