Non-Member Public Interest Representative for Council 

The Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) is seeking a Public Interest Representative (PIR) to fill a volunteer OPPI Council position for the governance term of June 2026 to June 2028. The Council is made up of ten directors who are Registered Planning Professionals, a Student/Candidate Director and two PIR directors.  Our two public members will offer an external perspective on the deliberations of the OPPI Council, enhancing transparency and ensuring the interests of the broader public are paramount.

OPPI welcomes applications from individuals whose lived experiences and perspectives will help strengthen the diversity of voices guiding our work. We especially encourage applicants from communities and backgrounds that are underrepresented in governance roles. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Successful candidates will be Ontario residents with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in a field other than planning. Examples include, but are not limited to, municipal employees, architecture, engineering, communications, public relations, and human resources. They will have some knowledge of planning and its dynamics, and a general understanding of the governance and management processes of a professional association. 

Candidates should be motivated individuals who can effectively collaborate with the OPPI Council, committee members, and staff. They should be committed to excellence in governance, public accountability, and practitioner competence, and possess professional acumen, foresight, and creativity.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Successful candidates must be familiar with the goals and objectives of OPPI and are required to attend in-person OPPI Council meetings quarterly, participate in the Annual Members Meeting (AMM) and OPPI conference, as well as attend workshops focusing on leadership skill building, governance, and strategic planning

Must be a resident of Ontario with at least seven (7) years of experience in a field other than planning, with some knowledge of planning and a general understanding of the governance and management processes of a professional association  Two-year term and is eligible for re-election for a second two-year term.
