Successful Conflict Mitigation in the Committee of Adjustment Process - Tips for the Novice Planner

October 03, 2017

3:10pm-3:25pm

Geared towards the new planner, this session examines managing conflict with the public during planning application processes. Using the Committee of Adjustment process as an example, the presenters highlight a step-by-step (checklist) approach to communication with members of the public. The goal is to ensure, to the extent possible, that conflict is mitigated before the Committee of Adjustment meeting, discussion and negotiation are fostered during the meeting, where appropriate, and the outcome of the meeting is not hindered by a lack of communication and understanding between parties.

Learning Objectives:
• Understanding of the benefits of conflict mitigation or mediation during the Committee of Adjustment process.
• Gaining knowledge about tips for mitigating conflict between parties during the Committee of Adjustment process.
• Understanding how these tips can be applied to other planning-related public processes.
