Downtown Meaford Heritage Conservation District – A New District Challenged with Balancing the Old With New

Participants will explore downtown Meaford where a heritage conservation district was recently established. On route the presenters will highlight the process of establishing the district and, as participants pass through the communities of Clarksburg and Thornbury, highlight how heritage preservation can occur without an HCD. The presenters offer the perspectives of local planners, consultants and heritage committee member.
 
Learning Objectives:
  • Gaining knowledge about the process of creating a HCD, including balancing the diverse perspectives of the general public and building owners, the influence of community economic viability on heritage preservation and use of a cultural anchor as a catalyst for heritage preservation.  
  • Gaining knowledge about the pros and cons of implementing an HCD, as well as tools that help support maintenance of an HCD including community improvement plans and property standards. 
  • Understanding the planner’s responsibilities and obligations in administering a HCD plan when there is not a professional heritage planner on staff, and how to work with a municipal heritage committee.
