302A: The Future is Lonely – From Isolation to Inclusion in the Digital Age

October 01, 2019

2:30PM - 3:00PM

It is estimated that 80% of Canada’s population is living in cities; surrounded by more buildings, people, amenities, and opportunities than before. Urbanization, aging populations, and connectivity (physical and digital) largely influence how people, technology and environments interact. However, these movements have culminated in a dichotomy between increasingly “connected” communities and their effects on mental health; particularly, the feeling of social isolation, a rising public health epidemic that has resulted from the ever-increasing solidarity of modern lifestyles. Through storytelling and research review, this session will frame how the modern world is transforming our communities, and in turn, increasing social isolation. Participants will learn more about how planners can focus on the future to determine what they should design for today to mitigate against isolation and how technology can be effectively integrated to do so.
