Community Energy Planning can be used as an integrated tool to enable communities to generate renewable and low carbon energy to reduce emissions, enhance system resilience to climate impacts, generate local economic opportunities and ensure there is enough capacity and grid stability to supply energy efficiently and economically. Planners can play a key role in this transition by leveraging their expertise and knowledge of land use planning and local development patterns. This session will present research on Community Energy Planning undertaken by the Ontario Climate Consortium at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, York University, and Quality Urban Energy Systems of Tomorrow (QUEST). This collaborative partnership was established to respond to the challenges of climate change and the need to support sustainable energy, economics, and communities. Participants will also learn how land use planning influences energy use and emissions, generate new ideas for building the capacity of municipalities to undertake community energy planning initiatives, and learn of the various implementation tools that support community energy planning.
