801A: From Suburban to Urban – How Bus Rapid Transit is Supporting Growth in York Region

October 03, 2019

10:45AM - 11:15AM

York Region is projected to grow to 1.8 million people and 900,000 jobs by 2041. To accommodate this fast growth, the Region created strategies to ensure new development is more compact, pedestrian-friendly and accessible by transit. That is where Viva was born – a dedicated bus rapid transit corridor that seamlessly connects conventional or alternative transit service from the rural and suburb areas of York Region to rapid transit in the more urban areas. To date, almost 35 kilometres of bus rapid transit are either in service or under construction along key corridors in the Region, connecting customers to high speed rail, subway and conventional and bus rapid transit in adjacent communities. Through design and construction, and now in service, the York Region Rapid Transit Corporation (YRRTC) will share their insights and learnings on delivering a successful and beautiful bus rapid transit network in a municipality made up of urban, suburban and rural contexts. Participants will learn how to change development from car-centric to sustainable, transit-oriented development and how sustainable policies have been a catalyst to building a strong transit system in the Region.
