1000: A Canadian Institute of Planners Perspective on Climate Change Planning

October 03, 2019

2:00PM - 3:00PM

Climate change remains one of the biggest challenges of our generation. The role of planning in mitigating its causes and effects should not be underestimated. However, fragmented governance and policy arguably hinders the ability of planners to coordinate different scales of climate change planning. This session, led by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), will provide a unique opportunity to explore where these policies can align to maximize local municipal benefits and what tools are available to help achieve positive end results. This session will be split into three parts: 1) a high level overview of CIP’s Climate Change Policy and how the planning profession can act as a feedback loop to influence decisions. 2) How CIP’s policy can be applied by members in their day-to-day work, including examples of best practices focusing on implementaion using practical and clear examples. 3) A demonstration of the Climate Atlas, some of the latest technology designed to help planners better gather evidence to aid them in decision-making processes. A facilitated discussion will follow.
