How much fun can you experience in your downtown for free? Why do zoning by-laws only encourage retail to occupy the 1st floors of new high-rise developments? Why can't the amenities of new high-rise developments be shared with the public rather than being uder-utilized and taking up valueable space within the building? How can the growing cities of today support creative people and small busineses? How can cities attract people back into their downtowns to explore and mingle in a post-pandemic era? These are the questions that the concept of Free Streets asks as it looks to initiate a change in the mindset and policies of municipal planning and economic development in mid-sized cities. This session aims to get municipal staff to think of alternative approaches to creating vibrant and stimulating street spaces through pointed alterations to zoning by-laws and planning policies. This session also encourages high-rise developers to consider the positive impact their developments could have on the city that they have invested in, through the lens of Free Streets.
