602A: Multidisciplinary teams – never underestimate the importance of teamwork!

Ballroom 2-7

September 22, 2022

10:00AM - 10:30AM

Land development and construction projects require the skills, knowledge and experience of many different disciplines.  As Planners and Landscape Architects, we often lead teams with many different disciplines.  Effective teamwork, particularly when team members are from different organizations, is key to the success of a project.  The diversity of disciplines within a team ensures that different vantage points on issues are brought to the forefront.  A multidisciplinary approach means drawing from the team to redefine problems and reach solutions based on an understanding of the complex problems of a project.  Influenced by our own background and experiences, we all approach problem-solving in different ways.

Through different interactive platforms including video and Mentimeter software, our 30-minute interactive session will highlight some of the pitfalls of both bad and good team work:

  •  We will discuss how to better engage multi-disciplinary teams and engage better as individual team members;
  •  We will discuss establishing clear roles and responsibilities and how to communicate effectively;
  •  We will overview what knowledge you need as a planner and a landscape architect to lead multi-disciplinary teams; and
  •  Finally, we will provide a number of tips on addressing discipline conflicts.
 It is important that every discipline has a seat at the table – no matter how small. Successful multi-disciplinary teams lead to better projects, better designs, and better implementation.
