502: Disruptive Public Realm 2.0: The Next Makers Interactive Workshop

Ballroom 2-7

September 22, 2022

8:30AM - 9:30AM

Many of our outdoor landscapes in our cities and towns are simply “beige.” They are not programmed properly for inclusive, equitable, and diverse use. They are spaces not places. Come to a “disruptive” workshop that questions the status quo, thrives to be inclusive, celebrates Indigenous culture, and designs for multi-culturalism and justice. This workshop will present a different method to achieve a different result. Participants will use Reg Cooper Square in front of London’s City Hall and be “makers” of a great place as part of the applied workshop.

Based on Michael von Hausen’s most recent book, Public Realm: The New Makers Handbook (Tellwell 2022), learn how to analyze a space and convert it into a thriving place using various tools in analysis, role-playing, and programming. Get to know how to look at an outdoor space differently, measure its performance from both a psychological and physical standpoint through the Makers Moves and Cue Card. Get familiar with the elements of the Streetscape Tool Kit to expand your design and planning palette.

After an introductory presentation, participants will use the Public Realm Cue Card and the 14 Makers of Place in small-group, round-table discussions to analyze, program, and design the Reg Cooper site. Role players will also be assigned as part of the discussion at each table to ensure equity and inclusion. Registration will be limited to 30 participants to properly engage each participant. Each participant will receive a digital copy of Michael von Hausen’s Public Realm: The New Makers Handbook.
