#2GETHER2022
East London was once the thriving industrial heart of London. It experienced a downward spiral of social and economic health from the late-1950s onwards. Consequently, the area experienced many of the issues common to many Canadian cores including deteriorating building stock, absentee landlords, lack of investment, lack of access to resources, and inadequate municipal representation. In 2003, the Planners Action Team (PACT) report entitled Re-establishing Value – A Plan for the Old East Village established the foundation of what would become the Old East Village Community Improvement Plan (CIP) A Renaissance in London’s Old East Village. Almost two decades later, the cumulative and ongoing impact of a wide range of projects is visible on the ground, including but not limited to affordable housing, main street redevelopment, financial incentive programs, a heritage district, new parks, and public art. This mobile workshop will take you through sections of this unique neighborhood and offer opportunities to discuss key issues, lessons learned, and moving forward with various stakeholders and allies that are contributing to the ongoing transformation of the area.
