Affordable land, favourable agricultural conditions and land availability are a few reasons why Cochrane District has potential for future development in the agricultural sector. In October 2018, a database was established and a system implemented to identify farmland available for rent or purchase across 14 communities in Cochrane District. The Private Agricultural Land Assembly Project aims to link owners of agricultural land with local farmers (and farmers across the province) looking to start up or expand their businesses within Cochrane District. In this session, participants will learn of the potential for Northern Ontario lands for agricultural development, see the application of GIS and the use of publicly available data to build a database of landowners with particular characteristics, and learn about public available data on soil and other land characteristics that can determine potential for agriculture use.
