Community design processes can sometimes be exercises in frustration and confusion as planners strive to balance their role as experts with that of facilitators working to find common ground among differing interests. The bottom line is that people are more likely to support a design when they understand the consequences associated with different choices. The session will draw on case studies of successful community design projects—including street designs, parks and public realm plans and wayfinding strategies—to bring the core principles and tools to life. Participants are encouraged to bring examples from their own practice to apply what they’ve learned during the session.
