106A: New Strategies for Parks and Open Space in Growing Cities

October 05, 2016

11:00am - 11:15am

As land values rise and space for parks becomes more difficult to find for many Ontario municipalities, new strategies are needed to create dynamic parks and open spaces that serve growing communities. The traditional model of acquiring land and building a park with grass, some trees, and a bench is no longer sufficient. Showcasing a range of case studies, this session will explore new models of parks and open space that are emerging to meet the needs of diverse residents and respond to the pressures of intensification. Whether repurposing streets as parks, redefining laneways, revitalizing central gathering spaces, or using flexible designs and temporary installations, these new models broaden the idea of the traditional park and offer new opportunities for imaginative community programming.
